“ Serving South Gippsland “

For 2012 there will be five categories into which members can enter their photos.

The categories are:

NOVICE

1. 6 X 4” to 8 X 12” (A4) Prints and matted, including all sizes in between, for less experienced photographers only.

The only editing that is allowed in this category are normal enhancements to an image making it more presentable, this includes:

• levels adjustments
• increasing or decreasing highlight and shadows
• altering colour saturation
• removing blemishes on the image such as dust on the sensor or other lens artefacts
• sharpening image
• cropping
• no major image manipulation is allowed, objects added, or  layering of multiple images

2.   Electronic digitally projected images (EDPI’s) with minimal photoediting.

The only editing that is allowed in this category are normal enhancements to an image making it more presentable, this includes:

• levels adjustments
• increasing or decreasing highlight and shadows
• altering colour saturation
• removing blemishes on the image such as dust on the sensor or other lens artefacts
• sharpening image
• cropping
• no major image manipulation is allowed, objects added, or  layering of multiple images

5.    Creative EDPI’s.

This category allows all levels of photoeding and digital manipulation.   Multiple images can be used, additions through layers are acceptable and no restrictions in editing are placed on you if you enter in this category.

A total of 2 photos only may be submitted regardless of the categories and all must be submitted on the monthly competition subject. 

Members do not have to confine their two images to one category only. They may submit one in one category then the other in another category.

For example if you are  a NOVICE Photographer you may elect to submit one photo in Category 1 and the other in Category 2, 3, 4, or 5. That is you can mix them between the five categories if you so desire.

Note carefully however if you are  an ADVANCED photographer you can only enter images into the ADVANCED section. These being either 3, 4 or 5.

Labelling of images for 2012

Your number_Competition_Title_Category

For 2011 there will be four categories into which members can enter their photos.

The categories are:

1. 6 X 4” to 8 X 12” (A4) Prints and matted, including all sizes in between, for less experienced photographers only.

     2.    5 X 7” to 8 X 12” (A4) Prints and matted, including all sizes in between for more advanced photographers or less experienced who want to have a go.

     3.   Electronic Digital Projected Image (EDPI). This category includes both less experienced and advanced photographers.

 The above three categories shall be judged and all photos shall be critiqued.

These 3 categories can only be minimally photo edited, ie. cropping, minimal adjustments and curves through Photoshop or similar programs are allowed.

    4.  EDPI only; not judged or critiqued.  This category is for those who want to put in photos but not have them judged.  These photos must be confined to that month’s theme and they may be digitally enhanced or as shot from the camera, also they must be presented on the night that the other categories in the same subject are judged and critiqued.

ie. this category will allow heavy and major digital enhancements through Photoshop or similar programs.

   A total of 2 photos only may be submitted regardless of the categories.

 For example you may elect to submit one photo in Category 1 and the other in Category 2,3or 4. That is you can mix them between the four categories if you so desire.

 Note: Category 3 will be reviewed very early on in the year and if there is adequate demand it shall be divided into a less experienced group and a more experienced group.

               Other categories will be reviewed through the year if deemed necessary.

NB. Images will be accepted if they are taken only 1-2 years prior but not much older than this, they do not have to be taken this year but we encourage most members to aim for images taken this year if possible.

FEBRUARY

LANDSCAPE/SEASCAPE

Natural scenery which may show some evidence of man’s influence.

MARCH

OPEN

Any subject but to be successful it should contain one or more of the following qualities; strong pictorial appeal ( good composition and lighting ), impact or story telling interest.

APRIL

ABSTRACT

An image which isolates an area and creates a non-recognisable subject.

MAY

ENTRANCES/EXITS

An object or place that allows one to enter or leave. This could include doorways, gates or foyers.

JUNE

STILL LIFE

An image of an arrangement of inanimate objects whether natural or man-made or a combination of both. It may also be an arrangement of a small object(s) in a natural or contrived setting.

JULY

FIRE/SMOKE

An image with either of these as a main subject.

AUGUST

DEPTH OF FIELD

Deliberate control of your aperture to create an effect. EXAMPLE: macro with limited DOF or landscape with extended depth of field.

SEPTEMBER

PORTRAITURE

A portrait of a person, animal or both which may range from a head to a full length study and which may include accessories and backgrounds in character with the subject.

OCTOBER

SLOW SHUTTER SPEED

Use of a slow shutter speed ( 1/2 second or more ).

NOVEMBER

NATURE

A picture of flora or fauna excluding domesticated animals, cultivated plants or flowers. Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable, and minimal post processing is requested.

Message from Elizabeth – I’ve just spent some time testing this little gadget to find out if it will re-size our images properly for photographic competitions…and it sure does! The maximum pixel size allowed for competitions is 1024 for the width and 768 for the height. The file size ideally should be about 250KB and no more than 300KB. For those who don’t use photoshop, PixResizer is the easy answer to changing both your picture dimensions and the file size all in one go.

ABOUT PIX RESIZER – PIXresizer is a photo resizing program to easily create e-mail friendly versions of your images with reduced file sizes.

The reduced files can be saved in a different folder (or with a slightly different file name), so your original images are not altered at all. PIXresizer offers several different resizing methods to choose from and can automatically recognize image sizes to calculate the best fit. In addition, it can convert between image formats (JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG and TIFF), rotate images, convert to grayscale and re-size multiple images in batches.

Tip For Photo Competition Re-Sizing – Work with each picture individually. Don’t use the batch editing function for this purpose.

Our Print Steward Linda Keagle has been busy lately setting up a site where members of the Foster and Warragul Clubs can exchange all matters photographic. As Linda says:

“For those of you with Internet Access, Flickr has a great site for uploading photos and sharing with the photographic community….you may already be a member! I have started a group on the site called “Gippy Clickrs” (thank you Ruth Burleigh for the name suggestion) and I hope it can be a place where uploaded photos can get meaningful critiques. I also am hoping in the future to start interesting discussions there about different subjects…informational and or educational.”

This will be a place where any person who has an interest, will be able to add relevant information, photographs, news, notices of upcoming events, competitions etc.

It will also simplify the writing and sending of information to our members. The newsletter editors will be able to make just one post, and then each person who subscribes will receive an email of the latest news added to the site, sent by our automated delivery system. It’s wonderfully efficient!
